Briefly considered W140 300SD - trading my '87 300D. Sales guy told me it would be a servicing nightmare. I didn't get one, and he was right.

Test drove it - a barge. Least Mercedes-like handling of any Mercedes I've driven. It's a pig. Seems your best bet would be the following S-Class - SWB.

A friend is going car buying and he did check one W140 that is for sale here in Finland. It was 300SEL that had been imported from Saudi Arabia and it had pretty much every option except heated seats and larger number of cylinders.

Sadly it wasn't totally rust free. Not terrible but needs some work. And yes, it was white.

I myself do like W140s but I do prefer W126s over them.
